How long does RV propane last, really?
Running out of propane halfway through a cold night is the moment most RV renters start taking fuel seriously. The furnace clicks off, the fridge stops cooling, the water goes cold, and you are driving to find a refill at 11 PM in a town that rolled up its sidewalks at 9. This RV propane calculator exists so that scenario stays hypothetical.
The math behind propane runtime is not complicated, but the inputs matter. Tank size, fill level, outside temperature, thermostat setting, and which appliances you run all push the number up or down. Plug in honest numbers and you will land within a day or two of the real runtime, which is close enough to plan refills with confidence.
Key terms, in plain English
- BTU/hr
- British Thermal Units per hour. The rate an appliance burns propane. A 30,000 BTU furnace consumes about 0.33 gallons per hour at full blast.
- Propane gallon vs pound
- A gallon of propane weighs about 4.2 pounds. A "20-lb" tank holds about 4.7 gallons when filled to the 80 percent safe limit.
- Vaporization rate
- How fast liquid propane turns to gas inside the tank. A cold tank vaporizes slower, which is why a small 20-lb tank can struggle to feed a 30,000 BTU furnace below 20F.
- Regulator
- The brass valve that steps tank pressure down to 11 inches water column for your RV appliances. A frozen or failing regulator is the most common cold-weather propane failure.
- Tank gauge
- The dial or float that reads fill percentage. Most read empty at 20 percent and full at 80 percent (the max safe fill), so a "full" tank is really 80 percent full.
How the runtime estimate works
The calculator works in three steps. First it figures out how many gallons of propane you actually have, which is tank capacity multiplied by your fill level. Then it walks through each appliance you have running, multiplies its BTU/hr rating by the effective hours per day, and divides by 91,500 (the BTU in one gallon of propane) to get gallons per day. Finally it divides available gallons by daily use to get days of runtime.
The one wrinkle is the furnace. Instead of using a flat runtime, the tool applies a duty cycle based on outside temperature. At 25F the furnace might run 55 percent of the hour, and at 10F it runs closer to 75 percent. Your thermostat setting nudges that up or down about 1.2 percent per degree off the 68F baseline. That is why two trips with identical tanks can last very different amounts of time, and why RV furnace BTU consumption dominates every cold-weather estimate.
Written out, the formula looks like this:
Available gallons = Tank capacity × fill level
Daily use = Σ (appliance BTU × effective hours ÷ 91,500)
Runtime days = Available gallons ÷ Daily use
Say you have a 30-lb tank (7.1 gallons) at 100%, with the furnace (30,000 BTU) running 16 hours in cold weather (20 to 40F) at a 55% duty cycle, plus the fridge on propane (2,200 BTU, 24 hrs), the stove (9,000 BTU, 1 hr), and the water heater (12,000 BTU, 1 hr).
- Furnace: 30,000 × (16 × 0.55) ÷ 91,500 = 2.88 gal/day
- Fridge: 2,200 × 24 ÷ 91,500 = 0.58 gal/day
- Stove: 9,000 × 1 ÷ 91,500 = 0.10 gal/day
- Water heater: 12,000 × 1 ÷ 91,500 = 0.13 gal/day
- Total: about 3.69 gallons per day
7.1 gallons ÷ 3.69 = roughly 1.9 days of propane tank runtime. That is a sobering number if you planned to boondock for a long weekend. Carry a second 30-lb tank, or move to a hooked-up site when the forecast dips below freezing.

When to use this RV propane estimator
A few trips where running the numbers ahead of time saves the evening:
- Cold-weather boondocking. When the overnight low drops below 30F, the furnace becomes your biggest propane draw by far. Model the trip before you leave so you know whether one tank is enough or if you need a backup.
- Long weekend with no hookups. Three days off-grid with fridge, stove, water heater, and nightly furnace use adds up fast. The calculator tells you if a single 20-lb tank survives the weekend or quits on day two.
- Comparing rigs before you rent. A motorhome with an onboard 18-gallon ASME tank has very different runtime than a travel trailer with two 20-lb cylinders. Run both and see which fits your cold-weather plan.
- Deciding when to switch the fridge to propane. On shore power the fridge costs nothing in propane. Off-grid, it costs about 0.6 gallons a day. The calculator shows the tradeoff clearly.
Common mistakes that leave you cold
Most first-timer propane surprises come from the same handful of errors. Avoid these and your estimate will hold up on the road:
- Forgetting the fridge runs 24 hours. It is easy to focus on the furnace and forget the fridge is sipping propane around the clock. That is 0.5 to 0.6 gallons a day on its own, which adds up over a week.
- Ignoring tank fill level. A 30-lb tank at half full holds 3.5 gallons, not 7.1. Always check the gauge before a cold stretch.
- Assuming the furnace runs flat out. It cycles. The duty cycle matters more than the hours you set, and the tool handles that math for you based on the temperature you pick.
- Trusting exchange tanks to be full. Tank exchange services usually fill to 15 lbs, not 20. You are paying for 75 percent of a tank. Refilling at a propane dealer gives you a true full tank for less money per gallon.
- Skipping the spare in brutal cold. Below 20F a single 20-lb tank can empty in a single night of furnace use. Always carry a backup when the forecast is brutal.
