How EV camp mode battery drain works — in plain English
When you park your EV and turn on Camp Mode, the car keeps the climate control, infotainment screen, USB ports, and 12V outlets running. The drive motor stays off, but the HVAC system draws from the same high-voltage battery that powers the wheels. That is the entire mechanism: you trade a small slice of your driving range for a comfortable night of sleep.
The key insight most first-timers miss: the battery cost is modest. In mild weather overnight, you will use roughly the same energy as driving 25 to 40 miles. - Camp Mode / Utility Mode
- A dedicated setting that keeps HVAC and accessories running while parked, without the car shutting down or locking you out. Standard on Tesla, Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, and most newer EVs.
- Heat pump
- A more efficient heating system that moves heat rather than generating it from electricity alone. Uses 2–3x less energy than resistive heating in cold weather.
- V2L (Vehicle-to-Load)
- Uses the EV’s charging port to power external devices — coffee maker, induction cooktop, laptop — directly from the main battery.
- Vampire drain
- Background battery loss when the car is parked (sentry mode, connectivity, battery conditioning). Typically 0.5–1 percent per day, but can reach 2–3 percent in extreme heat or cold.
The formula behind the estimate
The calculator uses a simple chain of arithmetic that you can also do by hand:
Step 1: Climate load. Pick a base hourly rate by temperature: mild = 1.0 kWh/h, hot = 1.5 kWh/h, freezing base = 2.5 kWh/h. If your car has a heat pump and it is freezing, reduce the base by 0.5 kWh/h (to 2.0 kWh/h).
Step 2: Add extra loads. Add any V2L draw (laptop, cooktop, etc.) to the hourly rate.
Step 3: Total overnight energy. Hourly rate × hours = total kilowatt-hours used.
Step 4: Percentage drain. Total kWh ÷ battery capacity in kWh × 100 = percent of battery used.
Step 5: Remaining range. (Starting charge % − drain %) × battery kWh ÷ efficiency (kWh/mile) = estimated remaining miles.

These numbers are based on owner-reported data across Tesla, Hyundai, Kia, and Rivian forums. Your actual consumption will vary with wind, humidity, elevation, battery age, and your preferred cabin temperature. Build a 10–15 percent buffer into your plan.
Common mistakes that drain more battery than expected
- Leaving the car in Drive mode. If you do not explicitly engage Camp Mode, the car may shut down climate control after 30 minutes. You will wake up cold or hot and have wasted energy.
- Setting the cabin to 72°F when it is 95°F outside. Smaller temperature gaps use less energy. Set the thermostat to 75–78°F in summer and 62–65°F in winter.
- Running the infotainment screen all night. Streaming video or keeping the main screen at full brightness adds 0.1–0.3 kWh per hour. Dim the screen or switch to audio-only.
- Forgetting the 20% auto-shutoff. Most EVs disable Camp Mode when the battery hits 20 percent. Arrive with at least 50–60 percent to sleep worry-free and still have range to reach a charger in the morning.
