RV Kitchen Essentials: What to Bring for Cooking on the Road

RV kitchens are small — a two-burner stove, a tight sink, and a fridge that is a fraction of your home unit. The skill is packing versatile gear that nests and earns its space. Most renters either overpack the kitchen or forget the one item that makes every meal easier. Confirm at pickup what the rental includes (many provide a basic kit) and pack only the gaps.

Cookware

  • Pots: one medium and one small that nest together; a medium pot handles most meals.
  • Skillet: a medium non-stick skillet is the most-used item in any RV kitchen.
  • Dutch oven: great for one-pot camp meals; heavy, so bring it only if planned.
  • Kettle or small electric kettle: fast water for coffee, tea, and quick meals.
  • Coffee maker: most rentals have one; bring your favorite if not.

Non-stick is the better choice in an RV — lighter and easier to clean. Avoid metal utensils on it.

Utensils and Tools

  • Spatula, tongs, wooden spoon, whisk — the basics, not ten gadgets.
  • Can opener and a bottle opener.
  • A small cutting board (plastic, light).
  • Measuring cups and spoons if you bake; skip otherwise.

Dishes

  • Plates, bowls, and cups in unbreakable material (melamine or enamel).
  • A set per person plus one spare.
  • A colander that folds flat saves space.

Storage and Cleaning

  • A dishpan: wash in it instead of running the tap — saves water.
  • Biodegradable soap and a quick-dry towel.
  • A sink strainer so food never reaches the gray tank.
  • Stackable containers for leftovers and prepped ingredients.

What to Skip

Resist specialty gadgets — a panini press, a rice cooker, a stand mixer. They take space the rig needs for clothing and gear. A skillet and a pot cover 90% of camp meals. For meal planning, see RV food prep for families and the RV Trip Budget Calculator.
